The Approach
The concept of sustainability has generated much discussion in tourism theory and practices in recent years. Yet, it is fair to say that a mutually accepted definition of sustainability has failed to emerge from the discussion mainly because of the multiple interpretations of the concept of sustainable development, and by extension of its application to the tourism industry. While most of sustainable tourism indicators are scientifically relevant, they are considered as far too numerous and complex to be operational in the tour industry and they mostly concern the sustainability of tourism destinations.
The objective of our website is therefore to provide you with a tool that allows for stakeholders, such as local guides, ground-handlers (DMC) and travel agents (ITOs), but also travelers, to understand the broader perspective of sustainability and how to further engage in responsible practices.
In our view, what is required is not a mere accumulation of indicators but to look from a series of existing sustainability indicators at the perceptions that suppliers and users of tourism products (tours and excursions) have about sustainability and, how do they evaluate the performance of these products in terms of sustainability.
This approach is therefore based on a review of studies and research papers (Tanguay et al., 2013; Blancas et al., 2016, 2018; Agyeiwaah et al., 2017; Asmelash and Kumar, 2019) that have developed and tested comprehensive sets of indicators with the objective to assess the progress made towards a sustainable development of tourism in any destination.
In addition, we have looked at existing certification schemes in relation to issues of sustainability in the tourism industry. A sustainable product especially considers local products and the involvement of local population, it facilitates respectful insights into the local community while cultural aspects are emphasised and, measures to preserve the environment are taken.
From here, we do consider that the core indicators that make up our system must be understandable, practical, clearly defined and reproducible. This means:
- Their usefulness and ability to assess the contribution that tours and excursions make to the sustainability of the visited areas/communities (relevance);
- Their ability to be understood by travel agents and tourists (understandability);
- Their ability to encourage and promote action by both travel agents and tourists (usability);
- Their appropriateness in relation to key sustainability theories and issues (coverage);
- Their ability to provide a baseline for establishing indicators that can be applied to all types of destinations. This last point includes their frequency of use in other researches on sustainability and their capacity to measure the progress made (robustness).
We consider that for people to change, sustainability should be more than a word or a concept.
